2 issues I'm wondering about-

-Anyone using flats? Opinions on flats vs roundwound on T-40s? I love flats on my P but unsure what to put on my T-40.

-Any issues with string length since the T-40 is string through body? Did you have to buy extra long strings or will standards work?

Any other related input is also appreciated. Thanks.

i second the question, i've never used flats, was thinking of putting them on & wonder what brand/type anyone's using. i don't know about extra long, but you need long ones for these basses, with the current set of roto-sounds i have on the little thread is right up to the nut on the E string

I'm going to put Fender stainless steel 9050 flats on my fretless 40. I have them just haven't done it yet. They were relatively mid priced and I'll give them a try.

I've got the Fender ML flats on my P and they sound great. They're fairly high tension, though, so you might need a slight trussrod adjustment.

I think I'll try the webstrings flats on my T-40. They're pretty cheap and from what I've read they've got a lot of the old school thump. I also need a few other various strings so I can get free shipping. Worth a shot, I suppose.

On the fretted T-40 with the "toaster" pickups, I use a set of medium DR Hi-beams. I think that they give just the right amount of nastiness to the sound while still letting it be tame.

On the T-40 FL, I have some sort of unknown chrome flats that are well broken in and sound phenomenal.

I'm a novice. What is the difference between flats and roundwounds? I'm guessing roundwounds are, well round and flats are flat? Question

thanks for the suggestions, pretty much i've used the same strings forever - Rotosound Swing, so that makes me a novice on flatwound strings.

PT-43 - "I'm a novice. What is the difference between flats and roundwounds? I'm guessing roundwounds are, well round and flats are flat?"

rounds have a round wire wrapped around the core string, flats have...well i don't know, do i, i get the round ones, but your answer sounds right to me

Flatwounds are strings that have a flat wire wrapped around the core and are completely smooth. They are modeled after the strings that are used on an URB and were the first type of bass guitar strings available. When you listen to early Motown, you are likely hearing a Fender P bass with flats through an Ampeg Portaflex.

Roundwounds are strings with a round wire wrapped around the core. They came about in the 60s and were first commercially released by Rotosound.

like the way he thinks. why change strings? get another bass! let's run this past the old lady, you go first...

p.s. - someone who i give the rare 'thumbs-up' to says try Hi-Beam flats. so now if i try anything else, he'll go 'i told you...'

My wife gives me thumbs up whenever I find a T-series. She even let me take over the entire basement and convert it to a music room. Very Happy

Standard long scale strings will work just fine with the string through body bridge on the T-40. I believe that mine actually came new with flat-wounds in 1979. Back then Peavey had their own line of strings (Gliders) for bass and guitar. I'm pretty sure I swapped them out for rounds just as soon as I could afford it. As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the sound and feel of flat wounds again, and am slowly transitioning back to them (Fender SS flats) . I've got them on my fretted and fretless Foundations, and although it does not get played as often now, my T-40 is next. BTW: Has anyone played around with Fender Tapewound strings, and what do you think about 'em? I've got a set but haven't strung them on anything yet.

If you're referring to Fender 9120s, they were the first strings that I really used before I tried DR strings. They're alright when they're new: they are really warm sounding but still somewhat clear sounding, but when they get old, they sound a bit muddy. But then again, I'm just going off of memory; that's been about four years since I've had them on anything.

I have set of Fender 9050M (55 - 105) in my T-40 and imho theyre really good for the price, but now when I have played with same set for over 1,5 years, they are getting little too 'muddy' for my taste. Very Happy

But sure, I like flats in t-40. As long as they are 'fresh'.

Hmm.. Maby next I should test halfrounds. Any suggestions?

PS. First post! Woo!

Edit

Oh! And no extra long strings needed, normal set will work out fine.

In my last band, a few years ago (mind you i'm somewhat a bass novice, i mainly play guit) I played a jazz copy with flats. It worked well as it was a classic rock/blues band. Now i'm playing my t-40 in a more modern slightly heavier band with some basic rounds. I'm wondering how flats would sound in a more modern venue, if you will?

Basically, roundwounds' tone is bright and clanky with more sustain than flatwounds. On the other hand, you get a thumpier sound from flats, with no string noise and a faster decay. It's all personal preference but in my opinion, rounds are for people who want high frequencies in their tone (i.e. slappers like Mark King, solo artists like Stuart Hamm and guys like Geddy Lee or Chris Squire). If you don't want/need that, flats are the way to go.

P.S.: Well, Steve Harris is an exception to the rule. He always plays flats and gets a clanky tone, but that's because he always has a fresh set installed and his attack makes the strings to hit the frets really hard. He said that he chose flatwounds because always wanted a bright tone but hated string noise and it seems that Rotosounds were the brightest flats he could get. Nowadays he has his own signature set.
