single coil hum..

I almost always use the humbucker mode, but when I go into single coil mode with both pickups on, I get a considerable amount of hum, even when the volumes are set the same.

This would seem to indicate that the same coils on the pickups are tapped for single coil mode.

A few questions...

-Why would Peavey do this, instead of using opposite coils so that the two single coils would be hum canceling?

-Mine is a 1979. Do those of you with later models have the same issue?

-For those who have opened up and/or tinkered with the electronics: How feasible would it be to switch the tapped coil on one of the pickups to the other coil to enable hum canceling in single coil mode?

I am not positive that what you are describing will work. And it is too early in the morning for me to think that hard about it. However, the change you describe is a simply one to make. The pickups are manufactured with three wires. White, Black, and Red wires are used. The white and black wires are the signal wires. The red wire is a center grounding tap. Flip the black & white wires on one of the pickups... I think all that will happen is out-of-phase sound. But like I said too early for me to thikn that hard.

Using a single soil configuration is supposed to induce hum. This is a natural pitfall of the single coil pickup design. Humbuckers, as you know, are hum canceling. You would hear the hum, when single coil is engaged, regardless of the pickup design due to the fact that all single coils pick up rf and other types of interference.

Humbuckers works in 2 ways: Series or parallel. Series is the traditional guitar HB. The output of one coil goes into the other coil. Parallel means that the coils is side by side. The humbucking-part is due to that the magnets is arranged opposite to each other with regards to the magnet north- an south-pole. I think the wiring also is the other way.
This is what happend when you turn both volumes to max on a fender jazz. You have 2 singlecoils- wired opposite to each other as described. Together they are still singelcoils, but humcanceling to each other.
It's the same with the P.U's on the T-40. In humbucking mode they are wired in parallel. In singelcoil mode they should be humcanceling if you use the coils witch is wired opposite to the other coil. If you get hum in singelcoil mode with both volumes on max, then this isn't the case. You can make it the case by do the rewiring. It will work regardles of witch pu you rewire.
