I've bought and sold many basses on eBay and have never once had a problem. As stated above, read the description carefully. If the seller is describing specific either cosmetic issues, knows what a truss rod is, and supplies detailed pics with good feedback then it's usually pretty safe.

My rule of thumb is: the more detailed the auction description is, the more the seller knows what they're selling. I just hate when you get a one line description with one or two pics....I'll stay away from that. I say don't be afraid of eBay. If it's an instrument that you're really interested in, ask a lot of questions.

You know, I have read that a Status graphite neck made for a MusicMan will fit on the T-40.

Don't know if you want to have a neck that costs more than the bass would, but that option is always there.

Be patient and keep checking Craigslist. I bought my black T-40 about a week ago off a Chicago CL ad and there was a natural one listed a couple days ago for $200. (it's gone now, though)

Here's a T-20 neck on eBay.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the replies. I did see a T40 on Ebay from some store on the east coast. I can't seem to find the listing right now. Maybe it's worth the risk.

I also heard there are people who know how to hack Ebay to spike the auction in the last seconds in which it is impossible to competitively bid fairly.

Yeah, I know I'm paranoid. It's just I have heard these stories from multiple sources and at different times so I know it happens. With a brick and mortar store or truly reputable on-line source (in business for a long period of time) it is usually easy to get relief when the product is not what was expected (not necessairly fraud based - sometimes a product is not what you think it is until you get it).

I have also heard horror stories with Paypal (a division of Ebay now, I believe).

But I guess it may be worth a few hundred bucks to give it a shot and hope for the best.

Thanks again all!

Rick

I have purchased several guitars/basses on ebay without any horror stories. The thing is...READ THE LISTING...and if the guitar/bass is delivered in less-then 'listed' / expected condition just notify paypal and you'll get a refund from them...(of course you'll need to ship the instrument back to the seller)

Another thing is...if the seller frequently sells instruments they're usually a better choice then someone selling one for the first time, they could be trying to get rid of a problem where frequent sellers are doing it as a business! Just like a store. As a matter of fact many store fronts sell on ebay too! Again, I've done the ebay thing many times successfully and I do recommend trying it if you find something you like.

If it's a neck you need, I have a spare lying around, although it does need fretwork and some touchups to the finish.

Probably a little bit more work than you were wanting to do, but it's yours if you want it.

I haven't ever used eBay for guitar or bass purchases, but I've had great luck using Craigslist. All the sellers I've dealt with have let me check the guitar over before making an offer. Good luck on your hunt Rick.

I would love to find a typical natural finish T40 with Maple Neck (such as the one pictured on the front page of this forum). I already have one but the neck headstock has a crack and the Head pieces are missing screws and are a little dinged up. I'd like to cannibalize mine and another to put a more perfect complete bass together.

I have never done the Ebay thing and have heard lots of horror stories about ratings being hacked, and Ebay not doing anything to resolve issues so I am not sure I want to go the Ebay route. At least not to buy something large and isn't local.

If anyone knows about anything available in the Southern Wisc., Chicago Metro or Northern Indiana region, please drop me a PM.

Thanks!

Rick
