No problem at all. That's what we do, share all the info we can get our hands on.

That's a great find Tony, thanks.

In my experience, if the action on a bass is high people automatically tighten the truss rod because doing so lowers the strings. Which doesn't always take care of the problem.

The truss rod is made to correct an actual bow in the neck, although it will lower the strings that's not it's intended purpose. That is what the bridge saddles and the neck tilt adjustment are for. If a neck has never been properly set up, correction of a problem can be a combination of all three possible solutions.

Follow the owners manual, adjust the neck truss rod in small....maybe 1/4 turn increments and go from there.

Agreed Scott. Always use the neck tilt first, followed by bridge height adjustment. Adjust the truss rod as a last resort.

Right Tony, unless the bow IS the problem.

The T-40 recently bought had a very noticeable bow in the neck (the truss rod had never been touched, it was at full relief). Holding the bass bottom with my foot and eying from the headstock down you could easily see the bow, it was that pronounced. So, I adjusted the truss rod slightly, gave it some time and adjusted more until the neck was good (a guitar neck HAS to have a slight bow otherwise the strings would buzz on every fret). Then, I had to adjust the height adjustment screw, then the saddles. Each instrument is unique, depending on how it was treated since these great guitars and basses were made at least 20+ years ago.

Everyone's personal setup is....well...personal. Some might need high action because their playing technique is aggressive.

Exactly Scott. I've been lucky so far. None of my pawn shop rescued T's have need a truss adjustment.

OK guys, go easy on me.

I have never adjusted a truss rod before, I've always just dropped it off at the luther and have done with it.

I have my first "rescue" and it looks bad. What tool do I use to adjust the truss rod and neck adjsutment?

I'm green here guys, so the BASICS are whats needed for this idiot to get this right!

Thanks in advance.

Tony

Peavey sells a truss rod wrench or you can use a thin walled socket of the appropriate size. I still haven't done any truss rod adjustments so I don't know the size socket. I think someone has replied in another thread with the correct size.

International "T" Owners Club.

Tony, the truss rod takes a 5/16" socket type. Good luck ordering an original from Peavey. StewMac has one that will work. Buy the one for recessed truss rods. Here you go:

Tony, what is exactly the problem? Is the neck bowed in or out? PM me if you need some help. I'm glad to do it.

Hell no, I'm not the man...but thanks for the confidence Jeremy Very Happy

I just have had about 7 years experience with T-40s, and have learned from trial and "error" what works and doesn't. With the neck-tilt, it can be a little finicky trying to figure out what the bass needs...truss rod, saddle, or neck-tilt adjustments. I always stress turning the truss rod as the last resort.

Thanks Scott!

I just ordered the truss Rod tool from the link you posted, THANK YOU.

Here is the bass I just received, take a look at the LAST photo....it looks bad, I have a spare Rosewood neck but it looks like this truss rod was NEVER TURNED! I can't see ANY threads, just the top of the nut, it is finger loose!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180281295141&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=008

I didn't even think I was going to win! I placed a BS BID and forgot about it! I just sold off two RICS so at least the wife isn't going to kill me!

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

Funny how different these basses, I have another Maple T-40 that is about 1/2 the weight of this killer!

I'll PM you when the wrench arrives, I've NEVER worked on a truss rod before!

Thanks! affraid

Wow, it's funny. We were discussing that very auction. The neck does look bad but, as I said before, I believe it can be saved. When you get the truss rod wrench, PM me Tony and we'll discuss options. You may have just found a diamond in the rough. Even if the neck is shot (which I doubt it is), everything else looks original and VERY clean. Good buy either way.
