So I emailed Vic about a nice T-40 find on ebay and we got to discussing. Thought I would share this email from him and my response with y'all.

To: OzarkRifleman
Subject: Re: 'Burst w/ maple fingerboard

actually, i want one just like yours!!!!!

i like dark colors. if you notice all my T-40's are black. three with
rosewood and one with maple. i think a nice dark sunburst with
rosewood fret board would fit in just nicely!!!!

Subject: Re: 'Burst w/ maple fingerboard

I jumped all over mine when I saw it on ebay. Not only did it have the rosewood fingerboard I wanted since my first T-40, but it had the dark sunburst too, and was original as far as I could tell. Dude my max bid was on there for 3 days before the auction ended! I had figured I could get away with not a penny over $500 to convince the wife, so to include shipping I put a max bid of $462 on it, and 3 days before the auction ended, the bidding reach my max exactly. I figured well, I guess I could settle for another color combo, and psyched myself to the idea of losing this one and finding another, then with 30 minutes left I decided hell it stayed this long, lets just stay on this page and refresh every few minutes and see if I may possibly win it.

Total surprise man, no way would I have guessed I would win it.

I had to get a Peavey MAX 158 amp instead of the MAX 110 I was looking at. It's a small 15 watt with an 8", but it will get me by until I get a 100-Watt Smile. But I got to play around with her for the first time tonight. I plugged her in, put the gain on 6, set the tones at flat, switched both pick-ups on and adjust volume and tone, flipped the mystery switch and commenced tuning. I almost cried. It was 1995 all over again, and I was in my own little world, being surrounded and embraced by the sweet one-of-a-kind tone of a T-40. I realized then that with that finish I would have paid another $200 probably for this thing if I could convince my wife!

Nothing sounds like a T-40. I knew I craved to have that sound at my disposal again, but I didn't know till I tuned the E just exactly how much I missed it.

Congrats Jeremy,

It seems the secret is out, these babies are all over the forums and as a good friend and bass player of mine said, and I quote "they are the last American made bass for under $1000.00, for now".

I'm having a ball with my one T40 but I'm on the prowl for another. I'd just like to have one fretted and one fretless.

I have the sunburst, now I'm eyeballing up a maple with the first version of the pickups.

My bass is in the shop now for some tweaking, and when I showed up to play at church Sunday with my 81 Walnut RIC, the guitarist said, "hey, where's the Peavey"? lol!

And the congregation said Amen!

Peavey's are sweet, and so is this forum and the chance to share with and learn from everyone here. Very glad I found it!

Yeah, I'm in the majority here. Although a T-40 can emulate a Rick sound very well, I just can't get past the feel of a Rick. I go through these phases every now and then. It drives my wife crazy. I know I can get a decent "Rick" tone out of my T-40 right? Right....but.......the look and feel of a Rick keeps calling out to me.

I guess I need an intervention. While I love my Peavey basses, I have to have a Rick...I dunno.

I just got done watching Yes' "Songs From Tsongas", their 35th Anniversary tour dvd, and the Rick looks and sounds soooo awesome. I know, the "sound is in the player's hands"

Rickenbacker has been an obsession of mine since I was a kid. All of my favorite bass players from my favorite bands played them at one point or another....McCartney, Entwistle, Quaife, Squire, Geddy, Rutherford, Waters...etc.

Yeah man. Its like crack with these Peavey's. Actually I think everyones okay until they star offering BlowJobs to people for their Peavey T's. Then i'd say you have a real problem.

"Yo, man- I'll suck yo D*ck!"

gross!

Here's what i need to complete my collection. Got to get a black fretless. got to. preferablyy rosewood. but i need a fretles. Then i think just a dark sunburst with rosewood neck and im set. i would also like to get an early model with the toasters just to say that i have one. all are mine are blades which i prefer just cause....treble. I need trebel. Basses are Basses and they all have Bass. I could use me some treble.

but i dont know. last night i had a little jam session with some peeps and used my Bongo. actually i havent used my t-40s in a while. maybe because all my t-40s are in limbo. i have to set them up. they play awful. Yup, Scott, Havent done that yet. notice no emergency calls from me?

So, i need to find a project that lets me use my T-40's.

I'm right there with you Scott.

How do you think my wife feels!

I wanted a RIC for 20 years, and she bought me the Chris Squire in 1995 for a Christmas gift. I did great for 10 years only playing that one. THEN.....RIC FEVER HIT....
You know the deal. 35-40 Rics went through my hands (and bank account) 'til I found the ones i REALLY wanted. First I wanted a V63 so I didn't have to take the chance of messing up my CS...THEN, I wanted a ......................well, I'm done on that front.

I THINK I just scored my late 70's T-40 MAPLE/MAPLE with the toasters!
My wife is going to KILL ME! It needs a few parts....anyone have a spare TRC, Volume knob & "E" tuner? bounce

Did you already close the deal on the 70s T-40, Tony?

Here it is Scott, EXACTLY what I was after...I'm hoping it's ok, although, it sure looks good in the pictures..

Now I can have ONE FRETLESS & ONE FRETTED T-40. I dropped off the neck at my luthier's shop today. I'd really like to have sent it to Chip, but he hasn't responded to my last few emails. I'm assuming either a SPAM filter problem or he just might be just too busy.

I'm a bit worried about the BACK of this bass. The seller isn't giving too much information. I took a shot, I'm hoping I don't regret it.

I will have to find a few more parts but I guess it will not be too difficult.

What do you guys think?

Oh, the tuners! THANK YOU AGAIN SCOTT! I really appreciate that! Thanks too for that great neck! I can't wait to have it made fretless!

Nice score, Tony. Looks pretty clean from what I can see. I have an extra tuner, however, it's missing the screw to hold the post. They're tiny slotted screws. You're welcome to it if you want it.

Let us know how everything works out!!

Try sending him an email again. He said that he had some email trouble recently and requested all emails be resent to him.

a Hipshot's a nice practical mod on a bass too, if it can be matched to the tuner shape, but i'm big on going back to original on these basses. but try it, Chip Todd replied to me on the Peavey forum on something stupid i should have known but was too busy to check, i was impressed, he's cool.

to change the subject & relate an experience :
brought the secret weapon ( T-40 now known as DefCon Ten ) to a get-together of has-beens a couple of weekends ago. it killed. new-ish Rotosounds through someone's Ampeg V-4 & then an Eden with the bass tuned down 1/2 step = very punchy. i saw a lot of nice basses that day, but my T-40 (which they all remember as the studio bass & when i kept changing the neck pick-up) kinda stole the show. restored & polished, it looked great ( it's brown, not sunburst w/rosewood fretboard ) & brought a grin to all of their faces. maybe it was the gigantic plastic case - it was always in the van as a sturdy, horizontal surface for God knows what

Gotta love those cases. Just as sturdy as the basses they protect. Go for a 15 block stroll down the street holding a loaded Peavey hardshell and you'll gain a strong appreciation for the automobile, brother Smile.
