Look how much this Ahole is asking for this T-40. He claims it's 100% original but a real good look and- POW- them ain't the original switches. What a jerk.

It looks like a nice dark Sunburst doesn't it?? Cool! But a maple neck. Hmm, i have an idea. I got three black/rosewoods and one black with maple. Hmm...i want a dark sunburst with a Maple neck. Well, say if i get a sunburst/maple i can switch one of my rosewoods neck with the sunburst and BOOM- i'd have my ideal basses! Right? ...Right...?

Ive asked this question before on this forum and no one answers so hopefully someone hits me up this time-

What happens when necks are switched? They aren't original anymore. They are modded, right? Does anything happen to their "vintage" label after that??? Are T-40's with switched necks looked down upon by real 100% original T-40's straight from the mother's womb?????

hmmm...

Viktor, I think it would depend. The earlier the T-40, the more I would want it completely original. I don't see that many that are sold that are projects put together. That doesn't mean that people don't sell them all the time that way. Honesty is a big consideration.

That being said...to me, if a T-40 is parted together and it's what I want, then I'll pay. If you're interested in a nice sunburst body, I'm parting out my project T-40. The neck is already sold but everything else is available. It's the dark sunburst like you're asking about, not the light tobacco.

If you're interested, let me know. It's got nicks and scratches but it looks great. You can't tell from 5 ft away.

BTW, I see nothing to suggest that it's not completely stock. Peavey changed the switches in the early 80s, mostly when they went to the rail pickups. Looks kosher to me.

Kosher, eh? Why would Peavey switch those switches to ugly switches? huh????? I just confused myself. Thanks for your offer about that Sunburst body, that would be cool but thats too much work for me. I wouldnt know where to begin! If i get that i would just make my jerk luthier more rich cause he'll be the one fixing it. I want to learn how to set up the basses. Cool that there are instructions posted here on the net. But what of the tools? Gauging instruments? I'm finished with this crap band that tuned down to C# so i got two basses that need to be reset and another i obtained not too long ago that is all whacked out of porportion and needs a good fixin (its not even playable right now. Action is way high and strings cannot be tuned to pitch) but i cant keep sending these to the Luthier at $50+ a pop for setting up. I want to do that myself and save the major works for the Luthier. If I'm able to set up these basses of mine first (My "project" basses) then I would consider the Sunburst. Cause I do want a dark one. Yup, i do.

Viktor,

Doing set-ups used to be scary to me. I didn't want to screw things up. It's actually pretty easy to do, and it's fun to make even the crappiest bass playable.

The only tools you would really need, for a T-40 anyway to do a neck and bridge set-up are the truss-rod tool, a couple of hex keys (one for the saddle height, and another for the neck tilt...if it needs it), a screwdriver, and a tuner. If you would like help talking through it, I'm more than happy to help you in any way.

The only time you would need a gauges would be if you were refretting...so you could get the neck radius, etc. Not for a normal set-up.

Caution: With high action, a lot of peoples first instinct is to tighten the truss rod....NO!!! While doing so will lower the strings, tightening or loosening the truss rod is to correct a bow only!!! Lower the saddles or utilize the neck-tilt function...that's what it's there for.

That's a lot of scary and overwhelming stuff you're talking about there. I want to give it a go and do it. Thanks for your offer to help! What does Radius mean??? I read that in the instructions but it doesnt explain it and now you mention it.

Reading the instructions that I found here for making T-40 adjustments, im pretty sure i can take a good crack at it. Don;t you need a ruler and measurements to measure string spacing from the fretboard??? Im sure i can get allen wrenches but the truss rod wrench i need to get. Doin research it seems that a Gibson 5/16" wrench would do and that can be bought at stewmac.com I also found this-

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Measuring_tools/1/Basic_Setup_Kit.html

Wouldnt that be helpful to have for measurements???? Though the ruler in there is 18" wouldnt i need the 34" ruler?????

Also, the T-40 with the high action I saw that the previous owner had the swell idea of putting all the saddles on the bridge completely even with one another. I think thats the reason for its terrible intonation/pitch. I mean, say for instance I hit the fretted D on the A string to tune up with the open D- Whoa! it is way off and to get it top the right pitch u have to tune it way way way low and the string is so loose but if you tighten it it sounds like mickey mouse!!! im not sure whats wrong with it but ill be damne if i take it in to a Luthier and have him laugh at me.

DAMNED LUTHIERS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

What I mean by fretboard radius is the curvature of the fretboard. FB's aint straight...they're not supposed to be. A slight bow is desirable.

Here is a fantastic set up instruction tutorial (sort of) for basses. The only thing this doesn't cover is the neck-tilt feature for Peaveys.

http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html

Please feel free to call me at (701) 720-1260 and I might be able to explain things easier to help you, especially with the neck tilt.

Ooops, sorry...regarding the StewMac products, in my opinion....they're trying to sell you stuff you really don't need...$83 for "basic" set up kit. BS. I can intonate and set up my basses without straight-edges and rulers...thank you very much...and you can too, Viktor.
