What's the difference between the two types of pickups?

Is either of them generally agreed upon to be better or worse than another?

The ones with the line going through it are found on the later made basses, correct?

Thanks.

Toasters are the early pickups. They look like the natural T in the pic on the top of the screen. Blades have an exposed bar running the length of the black areas.

Toasters are generally thought to be much warmer while blades seem to have more high end bite to them.

Does this at all equate to either pickups being significantly "hotter" thanthe other?

Did you see the other discussion about pickups? It's about 5 or 6 threads below this one. A bit more info there.

Chip Todd once provided a somewhat detailed description of the differences for the T-60 board. IIRC, the toasters have two ferrite magnets, while the blades only use one, but positioned more efficiently. I'll try to look it up again.

Maybe all the available info on these two kinds of pickups could eventually be consolidated into a "sticky" thread? This question is likely to come up again and again.

Agreed. While both are great sounding pickups, the toasters aren't quite as hot, but they are a little more hairy sounding to my ears than the bladed ones.

As far as one being better than the other, it's mostly just personal preference.

Does anyone have any information on around when the blades replaced the toasters? I have a 1980 T-40 that came with blades, and an '81 that came with toasters, assuming the basses were stock and factory original when I got them...

I prefer the toasters so I swapped the blades out and put in toasters from another '80 T-40.

From info I've gathered there doesn't appear to be a magic transition date. I've seen serial number xxxxXXXX with toasters, then xxxxXXXY with blades, then xxxxXXXZ with toasters. It looks like both were used as available at assembly until all toasters were gone. Same thing on the flat and bat switches. I would place late '81 or '82 as the approximate transition date for pups and switches.
