Hi there I'm from South Africa and I want to tell you about the luck I picked up the other day. A friend of mine gave me a Fender type of bass for free. It's got the P and J pickup style setup. Both pickups are microphonic and the body is made of plywood. The neck was fitted badly in that the scale lenght was out with approx 1" The neck is a T40 neck in perfect condition. I told him that this was not the original guitar. The very next day I walked into a Pawnshop and saw the original guitar ...

Hey,

I got a T-40 for a little under $190 with a hard plastic case.

The guy said it was a 78, but I'm not sure. It has toaster pickups, and a weird serial number, not sure if it's original:

N00140-81-C-0431

Has anyone seen something like this? Here is a picture:

Anyways, when I got it I discovered that the bridge pickup didn't work. Luckily it was just a loose wire. I found the wiring diagram online and soldered it back together. While I had ...

Hi, all. When I started playing bass 20+ years ago, I played on a school-owned Peavey, and thought it would be fun to have one in my arsenal again. When I was researching to find out the model I used to play, I learned about the T-40. Sounded so good, I bought one off Ebay! $309 including delivery. But I have some questions, and I am hoping for some feedback as I embark on the world of the T-40.

(1) The Serial Number is 211270, which seems to be missing some numbers. The headstock ...

I must say how wonderful to 1.) Find this site and 2.) Find maybe the most underrated bass of all time!

According to the dating I have a 1981 which I picked up from a neighbor friend for $75, not to say I didn't have to put it back together and rewire it, but wow what a joy to play!

BTW, does anyone have good idea to clean away 28 years worth of grime on the finish??

I have what has to be one of the cleanest, mint T-40 basses in existence.

I purchased it 7/3/1978 at Ben Jack Guitar Center in Ft. Smith, AR. It was in their very first shipment that they received of T-40's, just after the T-40 had begun to be manufactured. The guy there told me to hang on to it & check it someday to see, but that it might be one of the first hundred made.

S# is 199970

So far, I haven't been able to access a serial numbered list that makes any sense to me ...

I have a deal swinging for a natural T-40, looks like with toasters, w/non-orig'l hsc, for $275. Not the best deal ever, but there hasn't been a T-40 available locally for quite awhile. Seller wanted $300, so I guess there's that. Deal will probably go down tomorrow.

I went over to the T-60 site and copied the serial number dating list that they have to hopefully help everyone here with their T-40 dates. Since the T-60 guitars were manufactured at the same time as the basses, the serial numbers are similar and were not separated between guitar and bass, just as they were produced.

I've been told that these are pretty accurate.

So I've been playing for 2 years; one without lessons, and one with. My friend's dad gave me a 30" scale bass with P-style pickups, and no legible brand name. The electronics have since broke, and I ended up purchasing a "Melody Guitars" bass with similar pickups. I've discovered that the truss rod is stripped, and bending away from the strings, so I'm in the market for a new bass. My only qualifications are that it have soapbar J-style pickups, and be in the $200-300 range. I've ...

Hello all,

I'm the proud new owner of a 1980 black/black pickguard/maple neck T-40, and a new member of this forum.

I have a simple question: are the tone pots on the T-40 supposed to change the sound progressively, or act more just like coil splitters upon reaching 7 on the dial?

What seems to happen on my bass is just that: no change in tone at all until you crank them up to 7, then the sound loses depth and a lot of volume. No further change until the end of the run.

Since I noticed that the leatherish cover on the front coil of the neck PU is worn away, I'm wondering if the string is hitting the pickup or if that leather shield helps with that in some way. I just picked up a great T40 off E bay a few days ago. I sat down with her for a few hrs and gave her a good cleaning, and nice setup. I decided to also check out the electronics as well. It seems to be stuck in single coil mode. The tone control acts more like a volume control. If I have ...

The sound is fantastic and can be heard clean and precise through all frequencies, cutting through 2 loud guitars and a heavy handed drummer. It has a lovely neck and plays extremely well with no noise from the electrics, not even a crackle. I am so pleased with my find, it even inspired e to post this and I never write on forums.

Hey Guys, I'm Back!

The last year has been one of great transition in my life. (No, not that type of transition!!!) NO excuses for not being around though, all I can say is that I am back and I'm glad to see people still posting. Looks like a new site has been created called the Basement, I will certainly check it out and applaud those involved.

I am excited to see how many new members we have. When I created this forum I thought that it might attract a few T-40 nuts but what I see ...

Does anyone still monitor this site or has everyone moved to the Bassment? I'd like to not miss out on anything here but it sure seems slow. If this is the end, goodbye and thanks for the stepping stone whoever is running the T-40 Enthusiast Site.

hi everyone,

just bought a '79 t-40:

http://www.gospel.bo.it/albums/userpics/10222/IMG_1052.JPG

paid 450€ for it with shipping and a hard case (maybe a bit too much, but here in Italy they're rare, and it is in excellent condition, so I was willing to pay the extra amount).

I have some problems though (minor, I guess):

- the E string sounds compressed and lower in volume compared to the others, is this a common "problem" on T-40s or not? I must say that the ...

Greetings all. I recently purchased a T40 in fair to good condition for a bargain price and was guided here from the Finnbass bass forum.

I'm from Kendal in the UK.

I've just received a trussrod spanner from StewMac and as there is slightly more relief in the neck than I would like/is desireable I gently tried to tighten the rod. I noticed the nut has a lot of threads showing implying that it's quite loose.

It felt good but the nut isn't moving down the threaded rod and I suspect ...

Hello,
I just bought a T-40 in natural with a rosewood fretboard, but the real beauty of it is that it has the most wonderful birdseye neck I have seen in quite a while. I have looked at the pictures here and have not been able to find another like it and was wondering if the people at Peavey ever made custom T-40s back in 1982. I own a Custom shop Peavey 6 string cirrus and the birdseye on it's fretboard is only slightly better.

Thanks for the help,

Hello all!

Thinking of getting a T-40 a bit later this year. Christmas present to myself and all that. Now, at the moment I have a Rick 4003 and a Fender Jaguar bass, and it'd be nice to get something with a totally different character. It seems like the t-40 sounds somewhat similar to a Rick, which leads me to my question.

I've always liked the sound of Sting rays, by which i mean a sort of trebly dry sound. How feasible is it to put some MM pickups from bartolino into a T-40? And ...

I got a T-40 and put it in playing condition once again...

the serial is 00509603...
How old is it?
It has the contour case, toaster style pickups and had flat toggles on it if that helps any.
I just replaced the toggles to make everything work again, along with some other stuff.

Thanks
